They eat and breed more readily than nearly any other type of lizard, and can be cared for effectively even by amateurs. Of course, it's still important to know about how to take care of these fascinating lizards.
In the following posts I will give you some basic facts and care requirements.Karen-Owner of Pawsible Solutions and an AVID Crossfitter!http://www.blogger.com/profile/17410627301812523078noreply@blogger.comBlogger57125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6951877667170610930.post-22252134476638671332013-10-05T05:06:00.000-07:002013-10-05T05:06:03.624-07:00Fears the Leopard Gecko Could become Extinct!<a href="http://www.thenews.com.pk/Todays-News-5-206224-Efforts-to-sell-leopard-gecko-condemned" target="_blank">From the International News:</a><br />
<span id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_lblNewsDetailMain"></span><br />
<br />
"World
Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-Pakistan) <b>condemned efforts to
capture and sell leopard gecko on World Animal Day on Friday, and vowed
to play its part in the protection of this rare species which might
otherwise become extinct. </b><br />
<br />
The leopard gecko Eublepharis
Macularis, locally known as Khin-khin, Korh-kirly is a ground dwelling
lizard found in Afghanistan, north-western India, Pakistan, Iran, and
Iraq. In Pakistan, it has been recorded from Azad Kashmir, Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa, northern Punjab, Baluchistan and lower Sindh.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately
due to lack of awareness, it is being exported as demand for the
species grows as pets. People living in mountainous areas and near the
habitats of the leopard gecko capture and subsequently sell it to the
middlemen based in Karachi. According to the International Union for
Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the reptile is of lesser concern but
increasing pressure on its population can push it towards endangerment.
Uzma Khan, Director Biodiversity, WWF-Pakistan, speaking on the World
Animal Day, requested the government, civil society, conservation
organizations and the media to play their role in the conservation of
this unique species and to create awareness among the public."<br />
<br />
Adding
to this, she pledged the formulation of tight rules regarding the
export of unique species, including the leopard gecko. She stressed that
“people should not harm the leopard gecko, as it is not poisonous,
neither can it make anyone wealthier overnight. <b>People should abstain
from catching it and selling it for the sake of money. We need to take
action otherwise the species can get endangered ultimately leading to
its extinction.”</b><br />
<br />
Leopard geckos are kept as reptile pets.
Their small size, robustness, attractive colours and relatively easy
care makes them a good beginner reptile pet overseas. Steps are needed
for its conservation and people should refrain from this business,
otherwise the species is unlikely to thrive. The leopard gecko inhabits
rocky stony terrain, mudflats with sparse grass and bushes. It is
gregarious; several lizards live in colonies in holes in the ground,
under stones, and in crevices among rocks. The gecko is nocturnal,
coming out just after sunset to go foraging and returning just before
dawn. It hibernates from October to February. <br />

contention in the leopard gecko community. Some substrates are
considered to be safer than others, while some are downright dangerous.
There are a few that people have varying viewpoints on, such as sand.<br />
Your
lizards will not do well on bare glass, so it's a good idea to provide
them with something to live on. There are many different options
available, from newspaper to sand to stone to wood chips. You can find
many of them in your home or local pet store. However, don't assume
safety.<br />
Some are more convenient than others, and some are
actually hazardous to your lizard and can cause significant health
problems. Don't assume that just because a substrate is offered in the
pet store, it will be safe. Even bedding labeled for leopard geckos may
not be a good idea.<br />
Leopard geckos should never be housed on cedar
or pine, as these aromatic woods are poisonous to them, and to nearly
every other small animal kept as a pet. The substances that keep these
wood chips smelling good are also toxic when inhaled in large quantities
or when eaten.<br />
Remember that there is a good chance your pet will
consume some of its substrate when it catches insects, or in an attempt
to increase its calcium levels. Choose a bedding that will not block
its digestive system or be poisonous.<br />
This tendency is one reason
that some people choose to bed their lizards on special calcium-rich
sand, as it provides a calcium supplement when ingested, and will not be
poisonous. However, there is some debate about the digestibility of
this substrate, as well as concern over the use of other types of sand,
as they can cause blockages of the digestive tract.<br />
Health
problems may occur with sand beddings, most commonly in young geckos.
Aquarium gravel and walnut shells may also be dangerous, as they are
small enough to eat, but not large enough to pass successfully through
the digestive system.<br />
If sand is chosen, (AND I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT!)make sure that it's the
finest sand you can find, rather than a coarser builder's sand, and
provide regular and copious calcium supplementation to discourage your
lizard from eating it. Many people successfully keep their animals on
sand without problems, but they must pay careful attention.<br />
If
using paper, such as newspaper or paper towels, make sure that it is
blank, or that any inks used are non-toxic. This substrate has the
advantage of being extremely easy to clean. Just remove the paper and
add new substrate whenever it's dirty. It's not a very natural looking
option, however.<br />
Bark is usually a poor choice, being hard to
clean and easy to ingest. Reptile carpet, specially made for use with
snakes and lizards, is a washable, easy to clean substrate that comes
pre cut to the most popular tank sizes, but does not offer a natural
appearance.<br />
Some people also choose to use slate or ceramic tiles,
since these are relatively natural in appearance (unglazed ceramic is
better for this than glazed) and provide flat basking surfaces without
the danger of substrate ingestion.<br />
No matter what substrate you
decide to use, make sure that it's clean and free of dangerous objects
or substances before placing it in your terrarium. Decide whether you
want to simply be able to clean it, or if you'll need to replace it when
its dirty, and whether a natural look is a big priority. This will tell
you the best bedding for your gecko.Karen-Owner of Pawsible Solutions and an AVID Crossfitter!http://www.blogger.com/profile/17410627301812523078noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6951877667170610930.post-1203963134227743642011-08-26T15:01:00.000-07:002011-08-26T15:01:29.497-07:00Breeding Superworms: A guide to raising and breeding superwormsFound this article on the web. "Simply said, temperature is one of the most important considerations for <a href="http://www.reptilechannel.com/reptile-species-profiles.aspx">reptile and amphibian</a> maintenance. Many biological processes, such as digestion, reproduction, respiration and immune response, are directly affected by temperature. In the wild, exothermic animals, such as herps, are able to thermoregulate. They regulate their internal temperatures by seeking out suitable niches in the environment. In captivity, however, the options for a herp to thermoregulate as in nature are diminished or even nonexistent in many instances."<br />

Their base background color is yellow or orange, but through captive<br />
Breeding many color variants have appeared.<br />
* Many geckos have toe pads that allow them to climb on vertical<br />
walls and on the glass of a terrarium. Leopard geckos, however, do<br />
not have toe pads; instead, they have small claws.<br />
* Leopard geckos are very gentle, which separates them from<br />
the rest of the lizards and makes them great as pets. You really need to<br />
provoke leopard gecko in order to make him angry, and even if he is angry<br />
he usually won’t bite you.<br />
* Nearly all geckos have a voice! Leopard geckos have a voice that<br />
resembles a small ‘‘bark.’’ They will use it if agitated.<br />
* Leopard geckos can live 20 years in captivity, and in some cases<br />
they can live even up to 30 years.<br />
* Leopard geckos are nocturnal animals. They like dim light and they<br />
come out at night, and sleep during the day.<br />
* Leopard geckos are immune to scorpion stings.<br />
* Leopard geckos are great pets. You can play with them and they are<br />
not aggressive at all.<br />
* A housed leopard gecko will eat bugs and bugs only, so be sure to<br />
find a specialized pet shop that sells them. The gecko likes to eat<br />
waxworms too, but avoid giving them too many because they contain<br />
a lot of fat. You can give them to your gecko as a treat once a week.Karen-Owner of Pawsible Solutions and an AVID Crossfitter!http://www.blogger.com/profile/17410627301812523078noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6951877667170610930.post-81777270967125962232011-04-24T17:25:00.000-07:002011-04-24T17:25:34.248-07:00Leopard Gecko Genetics—Part 1This is a great refresher "course" article on Leopard Gecko genetics and how various morphs come about.<br />

"Have you ever felt like you needed to be a geneticist in order to figure out the difference between one leopard gecko morph and another? Have you ever wondered why one leopard gecko may cost three times as much as another when they look virtually the same? Do you have great plans to create a new leopard gecko morph that has never been seen before?<br />
<br />
Leopard gecko breeding often requires a basic, and in some cases advanced, understanding of genetics. Good thing we all paid attention in our biology classes, right? When we understand genetics, we not only understand why a gecko may look the way it does, but we can also predict what it will look like before it even hatches. Here are some of the basic genetic terms and concepts that we needed to be reminded of:"<a href="http://www.geckodaddy.com/blogs/news/1713232-leopard-gecko-genetics-part-1" target="_blank"><b>Read on....</b></a>Karen-Owner of Pawsible Solutions and an AVID Crossfitter!http://www.blogger.com/profile/17410627301812523078noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6951877667170610930.post-28241012228903897392011-04-14T14:17:00.000-07:002011-04-14T16:25:27.642-07:00See Through Leopard Gecko Egg-Watch it getting ready to Hatch!A Leopard Gecko Swimming In His Egg Getting Ready to Come out.. "Behind the curtain of captive husbandry, one gecko species thrives, while another will not. To understand the species, their environment, anatomy and biology, must further studied. All animals have species-specific needs. Some needs are minimal some are greatly complex. Some needs are obvious while others are obscure and unknown. However these needs must be met to provide health, a quality life, and comfort for captive geckos.<br />
In captive populations, the more specific needs of many species are often not met, or are treated with wrong, careless, and lazy attempts. Often an owner’s preference of style and look of an enclosure prevents correct husbandry".....<a href="http://www.geckotime.com/the-impact-of-the-environment-on-successful-gecko-husbandry/" target="_blank">KEEP READING</a>Karen-Owner of Pawsible Solutions and an AVID Crossfitter!http://www.blogger.com/profile/17410627301812523078noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6951877667170610930.post-77315885433893406042011-01-24T06:41:00.000-08:002011-01-24T06:42:49.595-08:00'Gecko Vision': Key To Future Multifocal Contact Lens?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0H0qXAzALhcVtQHWiGSy926lxBAeLOK9gSw1Q38-cY47e0pgrAr5HIXQatO0medS_p8wre8pOfGKhIME0nOkghA0dW5H-lc2k5NEjKQURANhcC4ef4LVbTZs2Phs-Dl8vRoszJ3CRe2o/s1600/contact+lenses.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0H0qXAzALhcVtQHWiGSy926lxBAeLOK9gSw1Q38-cY47e0pgrAr5HIXQatO0medS_p8wre8pOfGKhIME0nOkghA0dW5H-lc2k5NEjKQURANhcC4ef4LVbTZs2Phs-Dl8vRoszJ3CRe2o/s1600/contact+lenses.jpg" /></a></div>We all knew that Geckos were awesome for so many reasons, here is a fun fact about gecko eyes that a lot of people were not aware of! <br />
